CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
HAGEN
When I stepped out of the shower, Kylie was already back from taking the muffins to Dave. There were still two plates full of muffins on the counter, thank goodness. That girl could cook, and I was so glad she’d made enough for me. I didn’t feel like sharing with anyone else. I didn’t care if Dave had loaned her his firstborn child instead of tools; I still didn’t want to share those muffins.
My phone chimed on the counter where I had left it when I got back from the store. I couldn’t believe I had let her get away with stuffing my tennis shoes. I’d been intent on revenge until she waved that muffin in my face. Her cooking skills were like a weapon, a tactical move to keep me from retaliating. It was brilliant, and it worked. I was pretty sure I’d let her get away with anything if she fed me delicious muffins all the time.
“What are we watching tonight?” I asked as I sat down on the couch next to Kylie. She had officially taken over my favorite spot on the couch. It was a travesty.
She glanced at me with a little smile and stretched out her feet to rest them on the coffee table. Her yellow painted toes poked out from the bottom of her yoga pants. “Home renovation shows. I need to get inspired for my backyard. I’ve started on it, but I’d like to finish landscaping. Maybe build a pergola or something.”
“Who are you going to hire to do it?”
“I think I’ll try and do it myself. How hard could it be?”
I stared at her. “Have you ever built something like that before?”
She folded her arms across her chest and glared at me. “Do you think I can’t do it because I’m a woman?”
“No, I think you can’t do it because I didn’t see a single tool in your garage. My guess is you’ve never needed to use those types of tools before.” I reached over and flicked an imaginary chip off her shoulder.
She sighed. “Fair enough. No, I’m actually terrible at building things. I tried to build a birdhouse this year. I thought it would look nice in the backyard, so I borrowed a hammer from Dave.”
“How’d that turn out?”
She frowned. “I roasted some nice marshmallows over that wood.”
“Well, let’s find you a plan that looks like what you want, and I’ll help you build it.”
She looked at me in surprise. “You will?”
I shrugged. “Of course.”
“Thank you!” She leaned forward and, for one second, I thought she was going to hug me—or even better, kiss me—but she reached past me for the remote that sat on the arm of the couch. “Let’s get inspired.”
An hour later and I was ready to tear my eyes out. I didn’t know renovation shows could be so dramatic. Heaven forbid that the paint color was too eggshell and not enough cream. Really? This was a thing? No wonder Kylie was concerned about my undecorated house.
I glanced over at her, and to my surprise, she wasn’t watching the show.
